With reference to my despatch No.136 of the

31st. ultimo on the subject of the engagement for three

years of an additional Assistant Surgeon in the Medical

Department, I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that

Dr. Hartley has telegraphed from Bombay that the Peninsular

and Oriental Steam Navigation Company will not release him

from his agreement with them.

2. I shall therefore be obliged if Your Lord-

ship will request the Crown Agents to secure as soon as

possible the services of a qualified medical officer on

the terms of the annexed Particulars of office.

He should arrive here not later than the

middle of next September.
